POW WOW ’14 / Streets: Final Recap

Defer, Norm, and Kamea Hadar,

After bringing you extensive coverage of this year's POW! WOW! Hawaiiit's time to recap the rest of murals that we didn't have time to focus on. Along with local artists, the muralists travelled from all over the world (like Defer &  Norm whose calligraphy made a perfect background to Kamea Hadar's overlaid face) to beautify the industrial district of Kaka’ako in Honolulu and to share in the aloha spirit. Enjoy the rest of the images below and see you next year! Discuss POW WOW here. Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta unless otherwise specified. Another collaboration that grabbed our attention during this year's POW! WOW! Hawaii was a long joint mural from Andrew Schoultz and Hannah Stouffer. The waves and kinetic imagery from Schoultz provided a nice contrast to the softer forest renderings and volcanic eruptions of Stouffer, providing an interesting continous landscape for the people who pass by in the industrial district of Kaka'ako. Hysteria 15

Ahead of their upcoming exhibition opening on March 12th at the legendary patisserie and gallery, Maison Bertaux, in Soho, London, we met up with the all girl collective HYSTERIA in their Hastings studio. Made up of Collagism, Aida Wilde and Shuby, the UK based collective creates colourful artworks  featuring eggs, legs, bananas, bunnies, cats, cupcakes, jewellery and bold iconography using mixed media collage and screenprinting techniques. Their new body of work explores their relationship between food, sex, gender and symbolism. Their interpretation of celebrity subversion devours pop culture serving it up in as explosive dish of delectable proportions. Spanned across two floors, the exhibition promises riotous visual misconduct and infamous bad behavior using mainstream, historical and religious imagery all to be enjoyed with the sumptuous taste of Maison Bertaux’s legendary tea and cakes. Throughout the tenure of the show,  the Hysteria crew will be running a series of workshops and High Tea events, giving visitors and insight into their collaborative workings. Hysteria runs from 13 March – 15 June at Maison Bertaux, 28 Greek Street, Soho, London W1D. Photo credit: Butterfly.

Faith47 recently took part in the #ANOTHERLIGHTUP project in Capetown, whose goal is to "fund the installation of a street light system into one of Cape Town's more dangerous neighbourhoods and empower individuals with the potential to be active agents in change." The Capetown-based artist contributed a new mural & installation entitled Harvest. Using very limited by shiny color palette ranging between gold and gray, she painted an image of an African woman with a round emblem behind her. The contrast between the image and the surrounding is emphasized with lights that are installed within the mural, which go on every time money is donated to the fundraiser or #ANOTHERLIGHTUP is shared on Twitter. This interactive piece was created with the help of Thingking and Design Indaba Trust. https://vimeo.com/88077207 Photo/video credit: Rowan Pybus. Discuss Faith47 here.

Gilf 5Points Gentrification AM 2

Since her performance art/installation piece “Define Progress” (video below) from the Surplus Candy group show a couple months ago, Brooklyn-based artist GILF! continues to raise awareness around the topic of gentrification in New York City. With the recent closing of the graffiti mecca 5Pointz in Long Island City, the murals that once graced the walls of the block long building was white washed as the precursor for demolition. Now the warehouse complex known for graffiti around the world for over two decades will house two high-rise towers that will be developed into luxury condos. GILF! created what appears to look like a huge roll of police caution tape with the repeating words “GENTRIFICATION IN PROGRESS.” Collaborating with BAMN (By Any Means Necessary), the two artists wrapped the former 5Pointz building on the Jackson Ave side with the tape, creating both controversy and a form of protest to express their views on the subject without actually damaging or vandalizing the building. Recently, we received final photos & video footage of an independent project that took place in Wynwood, Miami, during Art Basel Week last year. Initiated by the artists 2501 and Pastel, the Mirrorless project involves three crucial subjects - artist, home and people, that are actually the key elements of works through their interaction with the elements of the installation. https://vimeo.com/87382079 https://vimeo.com/87378731 https://vimeo.com/87364751 https://vimeo.com/87361205 By creating and installing artworks and mirror surfaces around four different buildings, the Italian-Argentinian art duo played with simple optical illusions that were created. The artists got their inspiration from different stories they heard from people they met, making this site specific project even more focused on the location. By involving the observer and the architecture, the project makes a reference towards the connection between the neighborhood and the people that live there, and how they affect each other. Swoon Studio Visit VNA AM 310

During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Swoon and her crew graciously opened up their sun-drenched Red Hook space and allowed us to watch them work on some upcoming projects. Typically, Swoon's creative process involves a multitude of techniques, from hand cut lino blocks to drawings, delicate hand cut patterns to intricately sown finishings. There isn't a detail that isn't on her radar. The creative vibe was matched only by the staunch work ethic as each piece - whether slated to appear in a gallery or out on the street - is prepped with care. Look out for VNA's 25th issue featuring Swoon coming soon. And if you're fortunate enough to be in New York this today (March 13th) from 6 - 9pm, stop by the Supra store for their NYC Takeover 2.0 (see 2013), as they will launch the issue with a host of goodies and limited goods. Art Focus: Tom McKinley

tom-mckinley-art-04

It's time for another Art Focus, with this edition introducing the work of Tom McKinley. The San Francisco based artist works in oils, creating paintings of mid-century and modern homes seen typically from outside, often times illuminated by twilight. Rendered in a photo-realistic style, the unoccupied architectural gems filled with art and furniture almost make a viewer feel like a voyeur as well as a little envious of spaces that we may never have. Take a look at more examples of his work below... Via Mashkulture.

Studio Visits: Diederick Kraaijeveld

Diederick Kraaijeveld 21

Diederick Kraaijeveld is a quite a special character on the art scene today. Historian by profession, he was working as an investigative journalist for many years, doing some creative works in his spare time during family visits in France. When his journalist job became less challenging and fulfilling, his hobby slowly took over, and about six years ago, he decided to make a significant career move. Nowadays, he is working and living in Hilversum in the Netherlands, where he makes his unique artwork that gets commissioned and exhibited all over the world, mainly in the Netherlands and US. Recently, he welcomed us into his new studio, and showed us around this impressive space in the oldest industrial building in town. The first piece he ever created using his recognizable technique was an old Mustang. Building realistic images using scrap wood as collage is challenging on many levels. After years of sharpening up his skills, finding the best tools to work with, and trying different imagery, what Kraaijeveld makes these days feature vintage cars, skulls, portraits, and a series of Converse Chucks pieces. Some of these works are commissions, and some are just concepts he felt like doing - like the 3D map of Manhattan that he recently finished after working on it for the last two years. The piece started as an idea, and he's been obsessed with it ever since. Obviously, not all the buildings nor the scale are fully matching, but the important landmarks such as Central Park, Empire State Building or Museum of Natural History are presented with all their recognizable elements, so the entire 2m piece looks impressive. The Dutch artist's studio is not only the place where he thinks of and creates his artwork, but it's a space that gives one a good look inside of his character. The basement is filled with old wood that he collects on a regular basis, both in his hometown, but also during his numerous trips around the world. These are sorted by color, but also, by their origin, which he finds very important. The upper, main part of his studio is both the workshop, office, storage, and the space where he keeps collections of different items and memorabilia - from vintage signs and parts that he picks up during his travel, furniture made of old plane parts, globes, an impressive selection of vintage mug shots, to his latest collection of old pneumatic tools. These are the kinds of things that Kraaijeveld is interested in, so when creating his work he is not only focused in getting the piece to match the original image, but also, including a bit of its history in it. As a historian and journalist, he likes to connect the history of the material used with the subject he is working on. For example he used the pieces of wood from Kenya when creating a portrait of Obama, and that is now hanging in the US embassy in Den Hague. Or, he used wood from old furniture at the student club of Dutch King Willem-Alexander when creating his portrait. Also, the old wood he is using never gets painted or manipulated in any other way other than cut in order to form the realistic works he is known for. Diederick is currently working on a commission portrait of Rutger Hauer, has a couple of skull pieces showing at Libertine Gallery in Amsterdam, and is planning his next trip to States where he will be working with Butch Anthony in Alabama in September, using an old barn as a source of material for their work.

Urban Nation is a Berlin-based organization whose aim is to bring together and connect the creative voices of the cities around the globe in a non-profit public space and to help shape the future of urban art, communities, neighborhoods and city planning. They are currently running an interesting arts program in their hometown, titled Project M. The goal is to improve the face of neighborhood as well as push creativity and connect people, by engaging them in different actions and events organized inside and around a prominent residential building in Berlin, while it is being reconstructed. Recently, the project entered their third phase which was curated by Norwegian street and urban art festival Nuart. The experienced team of one of the biggest and most recognizable street art events put together a roster that includes the legendary US photojournalist Martha Cooper (seen above), Lithuanian native Ernest Zacharevic, Norwegians Martin Whatson and Dot Dot Dot, the Australian Rone, master of tape art Buffdis, Berlin-based Evol, and many more. Together, they created site specific artworks that will be displayed until the launch of the next phase in May. Creating a colorful cover for the building that is being renovated, the works brighten up the area as well as invites passer-bys and residents alike to engage with the building and the project. Earlier this month, we shared some shots of work from artist JR (interviewed) from his solo at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. Not surprisingly, while there, the French "photograffeur" spent time on the streets working on new pieces to share with the public. Continuing the concepts of his UNFRAMED project, he visited residents in the area and chose some of their photos to paste up, exploring the city's history as the link between Germany and France. AM just received several exclusive images of the works Ernest Zacharevic made for his solo show opening at Montana Gallery in Barcelona on the 21st of March. Rock, Paper, Scissors! is the first European solo show for the young Lithuanian artist and is already getting a lot of international attention. Living in Malaysia for the last couple of years, Zacharevic recently introduced his fine art works in the country with a big solo show Art is Rubish (covered) and is currently in Europe taking part in Project M (covered) as well as working on his show in Barcelona. Along with opening the show, Ernest created couple of recognizable murals around the city and worked on an edition of hand finished prints that will be released later on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgJhtP_sF7w Discuss Ernest Zacharevic here.
