Newly formed art collective devNgosha recently stopped by the offices of theAudience and painted a new mural entitled Connected. Situated in the same building that houses work from JR (covered) and Kozyndan (covered), this new multi-wall project combines the talents of Devin Liston and Gosha Levochkin. In the past, Devin's work has always had a strong emphasis on portrait work and during his time as part of Cyrcle., he helped formed a style that gave that group a multi-faceted approach to their art. On the other hand, Gosha's work has touched upon the themes of the urban landscape and how it affects sorrounding people in form of watercolors. With this mural now, the duo have combined those different strengths and experiences and thus, have created an art piece that is both a reflection of their previous work as well as a new style emerging from this collaboration. They recently made their first appearance during a group show at C.A.V.E. Gallery which also showed the works of other artists such as Dan Quintana and Grady Gordon and Van Saro. Plus, they are also preparing for their first solo show over at Soze Gallery on March 1st, titled Pressure, which will focus on the pressures of our society today and how it is manifests through people's and expressions. So stay tuned for that exhibition but in the meantime, check out photos from devNgosha's new mural... Photo credit: Theonepointeight

For our newest Art Focus feature, we will be introducing the work of Shintaro Ohata, currently represented by Yukari Art in Japan. As both a painter and sculptor, he combines his acrylic renderings with polystyrene based sculptures into one piece in novel ways. These every day scenes of people going about their business from the Japanese artist are accented by the three-dimensional elements that are painted to look like the "backdrop" piece itself. Take a look at more examples of the work below... Tipped off by Graffart.

We've been following Brooklyn based painter Eric White's (interviewed) progress as he was steadily working his brush magic over recent months in anticipation of his double solo show in Copenhagen, currently sharing the stage with Daniel Davidson entitled Magic Kingdom at Gallery Poulsen in Denmark. Eric has long been a man of transcendence, and this latest batch of work is certainly a representation of this. If you have the opportunity to attend the show in Copenhagen then we sternly suggest you make a night of it. Otherwise take a tour here of the stellar new body of work as well as the events leading up to the show. Discuss Eric White here.

Chris Berens Studio Visit AM 03

We had a privilege to visit Chris Berens in his new studio in Amsterdam, just after he finished his 3 new impressive works for last year's PAN Art Fair. The studio is in an old house in the very center of Amsterdam, and is filled up with a wide selection of memorabilia, souvenirs, random objects, from old books, photographs, religious figures, vintage furniture, and medicinal glassware, to big AT-ATs in the windows. Most of the walls of the studio, especially around the isle in the middle of it, are covered with images and parts of images from his previous pieces. He likes to have those scattered around like that, because sometimes he can just add them to a new piece he's working on, or even start a whole new piece by using an image from one of his previous works. Chris is currently working on few projects, which include an album cover for Belgian artist An Pierlé (the only commercial work Chris did since the cover for Blondie and Xavier Naidoo), a Sinterklaas - themed board for outside his studio, and a documentary about him being the biggest of them all. He's successfully balancing all those projects along with a role of a loving husband and a father. The idea around the Chris Berens: Master of His Magical Universe movie (this is only a working title), is that the cameras follow Chris as he's getting ready for his Asian debut show he's having in Tokyo, Japan in November 2013. That is actually the only show he has in 2013, so he can fully focus on putting out a very special body of work for that one. The title of the movie was picked with the intention to kind of make fun of himself, since his work is always referred as magical, mystical, fairy tale - like, and fantastical. He decided to let that all go, and inspired by the He-Man and The Masters of the Universe from the 80s, he decided to go with a bit of ridiculous title for it. At the moment he's learning and reading about Japanese culture, tradition, history, and trying to put together pieces of inspiration puzzle for his next body of work. Also, in April he's planning to visit Japan to get more familiar with the people and the culture that he's been always a big fan of. Thanks to a successful fundraiser campaign that was generously backed by his fans, the entire trip and all stages of preparation will be followed by the filming crew, so the unique look into his own universe will be given to his fans at the end of 2013 when the movie is planned to be finished. Discuss Chris Berens here.

French street muralist Philippe Baudelocque recently painted a new piece in his home city in his signature style. The gorilla joins his menagerie of animals that have made it onto walls in Paris, rendered in a patchwork of abstract patterns. This was placed on the door of Magnum Photo's Paris office. Over a half decade ago, I was introduced to this art school kid they called Bocksel. At the time, he was running around creating innovative art films, making cleaver t-shirts (with underlining political undertones), crafting skateboards into obscure shapes, and wheat pasting on his Friday nights while his peers were playing beer pong. Recently, I stopped by to visit Jon Bocksel's studio to say hello as he prepared for his upcoming group shown, SEA OF BLASPHEMY at Curio. These days, Jon Boxel is still hard at it, working on entire new body of work that focuses heavily on communication, exploring and even crossing the boundaries of what conventional written communication is and how it is defined. His work asks a bigger question, '"what does it mean?" If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area stop through the opening on January 26th, also featuring the work of, Bill McRight Ben Venom, and Bonnie Brenda Scott. Discuss this show here.

Just like artists we have covered in the past like Polly Morgan and Kate Mccgwire, English artist Jane Edden utilizes birds for her materials and medium of choice in her work. This recent series collectively entitled Ornithomorph (on view at Flowers Gallery through January 26th) consists miniature jackets created beautifully from hundreds of tiny feathers. The small sculptural pieces are Edden's way of "our attitudes to nature and the intention behind our consumption of natural materials." Take a look at more examples below... Via Designboom.

Gilf NYC Studio Visit AM

New York based GILF! is at it again, and AM stopped by her Brooklyn studio to peep her latest body of work premiering at DUMBO's Arcilesi Homberg. Drawing from her recent travels to Berlin and Miami, this new series entitled I EXAM is going in a totally different direction than her previous exhibition last year at Galerie Swanstrom. In this age of digital preoccupation, GILF! asks the viewer to take a closer look, as the message is more than just what's on the surface. Cut through the the ads and noise to see what messages are being delivered to us and what is actually being interpreted. Some new concepts revolve around optical illusions, such as the "Magic Eye" from the 1990's. The show opens this Thursday night 6-9pm with the artist in attendance. Until then enjoy an inside look below. Photo credit: AK
