Last week, ROA was caught on the move again, this time popping up in Bromölla, Sweden where he painted a mural for Ifö Center as part of their Artist-in-Residence program. The project originated in the unoccupied floors of a factory with Belgium-based street painter being the first international artist to leave his mark on the external walls. Because the area is known for its prehistoric fossil finds, ROA decided to paint the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus, a fitting piece in his oeuvre of creature dissections. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Bom.K was recently invited to Djerba in Tunisia, to take part in the big Djerbahood Project organized by Galerie Itinerrance in Paris. The French graffiti artist who's known as one of the members of Da Mental Vaporz crew, who has been showing his works recently in galleries throughout Europe and USA, created couple of different street works for this open space museum. Getting a chance to paint in such a specific and different environment, such as the streets of Erriadh, was a great opportunity and challenge for every artist involved. Bom.K was inspired by the place and the people, which was apparent from his pieces. The main one shows a shepard in traditional robes, floating along with his goat and clay vases that can be found around the area. With his signature spray can work and use of colors that blend with the blue sky and sand, this piece still has that familiar creepy edge that Bom.K's works are known for. Along with this piece, he painted another striking collaboration work with calligraphy artist Shoof, mixing more local images into an interesting composition. In the same way he created a hands piece together with Pantonio with each of the artists painting the same hand, seen from different sides and juxtaposed on some old blue wooden gates. By combining the elements of the surrounding, together with the imagery created, Bom.K surely left interesting marks on the streets of this small village.

Another artist that was invited to Djerba in Tunisia for the Djerbahood Project organized by Galerie Itinerrance was Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione. The streets of the picturesque village of Erriadh felt like a perfect setting for his ongoing 1000 Shadows project, so the artist painted several new pieces around the town. Like many other artists participating in the project, Baglione involved existing architectural elements into his work, but he pushed that concept even further. Using random objects, such a common clay vases that can be found in the area, he definitely created some of his most haunting silhouettes from this series of work. Using primary, bright colors that are in strong contrast with the surroundings, his shadows pop out of walls and floors and then disappear in cracks, pots, behind doors or windows. By painting on piles of rocks, or old pots scattered around, he made his installations feel even more fragile and therefore more noticeable, while fully embracing the power and opportunity of creating art in public space. Today's Art Focus features Fernando Gomez Balbontin, a painter who hails from Santiago, Chile. Seen here are an ongoing series of works entitled Thoughts About Life And Death, acrylic on canvas paintings that depict horrific crashes (automobiles and planes) with strange figures seen next to the scenes of disasters. Are they curious bystanders, the victims of the accidents, ghosts of the recently deceased occupants, or something more sinister? While assessing the situation, the viewer is left to ponder their views on death, which is in tune with the artist's interest on seeing how our society lives from its struggles with ideas of mortality. These works from Balbontin were recently shown in China with photos here for those interested. Via Beautiful/Decay. Discuss Fernando Gomez Balbontin here.

Curiot

A couple of weeks ago Pangeaseed.org wrapped up another praiseworthy project on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico - Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition. For this event that took place from July 20-28, they invited a group of international artists to help raise awareness for the conservation of the ocean.  Similar to what they did with POW! WOW! Hawaii earlier this year (covered), 1xRun.com released a series of limited edition prints along with this event, with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding the programme. Greatly needed protection for the whale sharks and manta rays off the Yucatan peninsula was the main focus of this project. The vulnerable populations of these sea giants is in great danger due to the Asian shark fin trade and the growing mega aquarium trade. The idea is to raise awareness within the local and tourist communities and highlight the benefits of ecotourism and the long-term sustainability of natural resources. In order to achieve that, Pangeaseed artists created some 15 murals around town with this idea in mind. The lineup of artists included Curiot (top image), Saner, Nosego, Shark Toof, Tristan Eaton, Celeste Byers, Meggs, Cinzah Merkens, Tatiana Suárez, Hannah Stouffer, Smithe, Aaron Glasson, Yoh Nagao, Vexta and Pelucas. After getting the opportunity to swim with whale sharks & oceanic manta rays and experience these majestic giants in their natural environment, the artists created some fantastic ocean themed works that will stay on the island as vivid reminders of the event and its cause. Continuing our tour of the amazingly extensive street art festival (coverage here) put on by Galerie Itinerrance in Tunisia, we now turn our attention to Phlegm. Os Gemeos are currently in Vancouver working on an impressive outdoor project organized by the Vancouver Biennale. Painting six large silos, on the full 360 degree surface covering 23,500 square feet (7,162 square metres), this is going to be their biggest mural to date, and their first one in Canada. With this project, the twins are joining the impressive roster of international artists including Ai Weiwei, Andy Goldsworthy, Vik Muniz and Jonathan Borofsky in transforming Vancouver into an open air museum for the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale. Located on Granville Island alongside the world-famous Public Market, Emily Carr University, and the boat docks that attract 10.5-million visitors per year, this is destined to become "one of the most recognizable and iconic works of public art anywhere in the world." This mega-project continues their ongoing series of large outdoor works titled Giants, consisting of large size murals that have been realized in Greece, USA, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil and England. With the Vancouver Biennale having a strong connection with sculpture, the twins did not want a conventional two-dimensional wall, but instead they found this unique location that allowed them to create "a dialogue between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds." In order to successfully round up this massive and costly project, the non-profit charitable organization behind this, set up an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign whose goal is to raise $125,000 cost of the project. pejac-paris12

Pejac (introduced) recently visited Paris and left a several new pieces scattered around the city. We just got these images of the last three pieces he did there, and even though quite different in their concept and style, they are examples of his wittiness and talent. Using just a basic color palette (mostly black and white) with minimal intervention onthe  surface he is painting on, the Spanish artist achieves strong pieces both aesthetically and conceptually. The first piece is called Exit to Surrealism, and it's a nice interaction with elements of a rough concerte wall. Using black acrylic paint and sandpaper for bright accents, Pejac painted a door that is opening behind an existing crack on the wall, but also in a way that blends into the surface. By using this distinctive technique, he achieved an almost photorealistic quality to this surreal mirage-like piece. The second image is called Ants, and it shows two children burning tiny men with a magnifying glass. This piece puts a different light on a popular cruel "game" that many kids have tried. By showing kids as big dark silhouettes, and ants as little people just minding their business strolling across the wall, it questions human nature in its purest form. The final piece is titled Vandal-ism, and painted at Rue Eduard Manet. It's artist's nod to a French painter, one of the pioneers of modern art. This dynamic image shows a silhouette of a young man throwing something against the wall, that splatters into Manet's painting Luncheon on the Grass. The artist picked this particular piece because it was created on this street which was later named after the famous artist. With this effective piece, Pejac questions the popular use of the term "vandal", but also pays his tribute to a classic art piece, as well as shows his great talent and versatility. Discuss Pejac here.
