Blu - Sardinia

With the return of our Streets: World Roundup feature, we first want to bring your attention to a new mural from Blu in Sardinia, Italy. The wall he painted once again showed his skills with large-scale imagery while working around architectural features of his surface. Also, the upside down toy soldiers are consistent with the Italian street artist's penchant for politically charged public works. Other worthy walls come from Ernest Zacharevic - US, Satone - Germany, Seth - Puerto Rico, Bordalo II - Portugal (source), Ella & Pitr - France (source), Deih - Spain (source), Herakut - Turkey (source), Pener Velvet and Zoer - Poland (source), Shepard Fairey - US (source), L7m - Brazil (source), Hyuro - Azores, Sicksystems - Germany (source), Violant - Portugal (source), and Bicicleta Sem Freio - Puerto Rico (source). Although it has only been several days since we first reported on the start of a massive new 3D mural that Os Gemeos are working on for the Vancouver Biennale, twin brothers Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo have already made huge progress on this project. Painting six large silos located on Granville Island, the Brazilian artists are working their way very fast through their biggest public work to date. Aside for their playful and endless imagination, they are famous for their speed while not sacrificing detail work. Being able to work as one, completing each other's parts, and having decades of experience in handling spray paint, it looks like the duo will definitely finish their project as planned. The new progress shots show specific details, patterns and signature elements that their work has been known for.

In order to successfully round up this massive and costly project, the non-profit charitable organization behind this, is running an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign which you can still participate in.

Out on the Lower East Side of New York, a new mural has taken form after some hard work by Chinese artist DALeast (interviewed). Featuring a beautiful image of a bird in flight (similar to a piece he painted in Hawaii last year), the wall painted with the South Africa-based artist's signature kinetic style is the initial volley leading up to his solo opening on September 4th at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (557C West 23rd St. location). It looks as though the new body of work titled The Laten Photon will predominantly feature wildlife-inspired imagery like his exhibition with the same gallery back in 2012. Last week, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Souther Salazar were able to complete their joint mural in Portland for Forest For The Trees (FFTT). The artists were invited to join the not-for-profit the public mural project, which also featured eighteen other local and international artists. Over the course of several days, Salazar painted clusters of his whimsical imagery against Monroe's Tron-like structured background that hints at trees. Resulting in a striking collaborative wall, their hard work can be seen at 4703 N Albina Avenue. Discuss Brendan Monroe here. Discuss Souther Salazar here.

Earlier this week, South African artist Faith47 made an appearance in Los Angeles where she painted a large-scale mural entitled The Preciousness of the Hunt. Arranged by the Do Art Foundation, the ethereal new piece in the South Park community of downtown LA on the Flower Street Lofts residential building (12th & South Flower Street) features swans, beautiful creatures that appear often in her work. Faith47's imagery is a welcome addition to the revitalized area and speaks to the positive future for the area, especially with more artist murals planned already. Photo credit: Birdman Photos. Shepard Fairey Hennessy Art Mural NYC AM 38

Last week, Shepard Fairey (featured) visited New York City to show a little love for his fans in the Big Apple. Mr. Obey and his posse worked on a massive six story mural on Bowery just off of Broome as he took advantage of the Manhattan skyline with the help of the L.I.S.A. project. Entitled We Own The Future, this fresh creation took over three days to finish and we stopped by to document the process from beginning to end. Discuss Shepard Fairey here. If you remember, we had the recently chance to share some photos with you of Kamea Hadar and Defer prepping for their recently concluded showing at 1AM Gallery in San Francisco. While in the Bay Area, the two Hawaii-based artists and friends took the opportunity to get up around the city with a couple murals. Mirroring their work for the gallery as well as their collaboration for POW! WOW! Hawaii earlier this year (covered), the walls were painted with the distinctive combination of Hadar's figurative work and Defer's calligraphic embellishments. Hadar says: "These two murals contrast with our mural in Honolulu from the last POW! WOW! where Defer and Norm went first and painted in the whole background and I layed my portrait over them afterwards. In this case his lines become an element in the foreground and its really fun how the two of us have been going back and forth. In some cases he lays out the “bones” of the piece and I paint the flesh over it, in other cases I paint in the figure and he dresses them with a headdress or other decorative element afterwards. Ancient Hawaiians put a large importance on the bones, or “iwi” of a human being, which contrasts greatly with the West’s perception of life in flesh and this balance of opposing perceptions is something that Defer and I are constantly examining in Paradise Lost."

After roughly three weeks of intense work, Os Gemeos recently finished their new mural for the Vancouver Biennale (Part I, Part II). The six large silos they painted on Granville Island continues their ongoing series of large murals titled Giants, and is now officially their biggest one to date. Covering the entire 70-foot (21 metre) tall structure, this incredible piece of work is their contribution to Biennale's strong connection with sculpture. For this non-profit public art project, Octavio and Gustavo Pandolfo have donated a month of their time, right after opening their recent solo show at Galpão Fortes Vilaça in Sao Paolo (covered). The twins spent the final days adding numerous details to their characters - pockets, stiches, buttons, shoes, fabric patterns, all by using lots of bright colors and by painting more and more signature yellow faces. Using the architecture of the silos, the giants are all kneeling with four of them facing one way, and the other two facing the other way, giving the finished work a full 360 degree identity. Fans of the Brazilian artists can still show their support by donating money through the Indiegogo campaign, with the goal being to cover the expenses of this enormous project. In return, they can receive anything from a simple "thank you," a copy of official limited edition lithograph approved by Os Gemeos, or even a chance to claim the "ownership" of one of the Vancouver giants. IMG_0498

We've been enthusiastically watching the work of Casey Gray over a number of years, since we first came across his work back in 2009 during Basel Week in Miami. To say his work has progressed since his early stencil compositions is an understatement. Using aerosol paint as his one and only medium, Gray has shifted from the multicoloured stencil explosions we first saw from him through to a level of maturity we've not seen elsewhere from a stencil artist. Recent beach portraits and landscapes along with his 'curiosity cabinet' themed work have seen a wonderful level of detail and texture conveyed in a medium that is usually associated with blocks of colour and simplistic imagery. However, Gray adds a level of detail to his paintings usually associated with fine brushwork and blending solely with an aerosol can. He's stayed true to his roots, but has made leaps and bounds aesthetically, especially with his latest work that blends abstraction of still life objects with dizzying op-art visuals. AM caught up with Casey at his Dogpatch studio in San Francisco recently where we had the privilege of a tour of his cavernous space. He was at the time working towards a new solo exhibition at Circuit 12 Contemporary in Dallas, which opens this weekend on Saturday September 6th. Take a look around his studio with us, and better yet if you find yourself in Texas between now and October 5th check out the Of Land & Sea for yourself.

The Swedish city of Boras recently hosted a street art event between the 4th and 7th of September. Inviting some recognizable names from the street art world, the organizers of the No Limit Boras Festival were aiming to turn the city's public space into an outdoor exhibition. Following the worldwide trend of inviting street artists to beautify dull urban facades, this event in a way opposes the strict "zero tolerance" policy that's in effect all around the country. We recently received these photos of the finished murals by Kobra from Brazil (seen above), Etam Cru from Poland, ECB from Germany, Peeta from Italy, The London Police from The Netherlands, Natalia Rak from Poland, Carolina Falkholt from Denmark, Simple from Sweden, as well as Spaniard Isaac Cordial's miniature figure installations throughout the city.

The Dutch city of Heerlen in the southernmost province of Limburg recently rounded up their 2nd edition of Heerlen Murals Project. The idea of this ongoing project is to bring life and fresh energy to the streets and the daily life of the city. Heerlen experienced a strong hit to the economy since the closing of a coal mine back in the 60's, and through programmes such as this one, it is slowly getting a new, positive and recognizable image. By bringing world class street art onto its facades and streets, the organizers are not only changing the visual identity of the city, but its general identity. This year's edition included new murals by international artists such a LA's art collective Cyrcle. (seen above), large scale portrait master from Germany, Hendrik Beikirch ECB, Argentinian muralist Inti, Case Maclaim with his photorealistic work, Brazilian graffiti artist, Finok, German typography legend, Stohead, and few others. Along with organizing and creating new murals through the city, this year's event included a large gallery show Hypergraffiti: A visual language of an obsession, held at Mural Museum in Heerlen.
