Kobra-Niemeyer_By_Alan-Teixeira-02

After making hitting both coasts of the US with his mural work (New York & Los Angeles), Eduardo Kobra has returned home for a new large scale project in Brazil. The 52 meter tall piece covers the entire side of a skyscraper on Paulista Avenue, one of Sao Paulo's busiest streets, and is Kobra's tribute to the famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who passed away last December at the age of 104. The work started on January 14th and since then, Kobra and four other artists from his team have been working on the painting around 6 hours a day to finish all the details. JR Tokyo watarium museum AM 19

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French "photograffeur" JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo's Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse selection of key works by the artist on numerous mediums including of course his coveted photographs. This great exhibition is open until June 2nd, so stop by if you're lucky enough to be in Japan during that time. Discuss JR here.

After a relaxing week in Hawaii filled with art, great food, and friends we haven't seen in awhile, it's time to share with you photos of some more of the murals that went up for POW WOW 2013. One of the collaborative pieces that seemed to work well for this year's event was from Nychos and Jeff Soto (interviewed). With both artists who have some of the more painterly techniques there, the combination of their imagery meshed quite nicely on this large wall. Discuss POW WOW here. Discuss Nychos here. The minimal palette that she uses blended in nicely with the neighboring structures and will be admired by art lovers in that part of town for years to come. Discuss POW WOW here. We haven't heard much from Italian street muralist Blu recently, but hopefully this new mural he just painted in Rome is a sign of things heating up for the prolific artist. The piece featuring interlocking cars was painted on the side of ALEXIS, an old building from the twenties which has been abandoned for years, but recently occupied by a group of intrepid students. It is named after Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed in 2008 by Greek police in Athens. Discuss Blu here.
