We brought you a preview of the Wider than a postcard group exhibition a couple of days back that AM's Sven Davis is curating at Breeze Block Gallery. Running alongside that will be a solo exhibition by olive47 entitled bonita bonita. The Atlanta-based street artist has painted and pasted her way around the world since 1995, and she aims to bring a visual Garden of Eden to her heavily installation-based exhibition opening on May 2nd. olive47 uses a bold colour pallete alongside symbolism and spirituality to create her stylized aesthetic. The artist currently resides in Atlanta, GA where photographers Steve Pomberg, Jon Kownacki and Kyle Brooks caught her working on this new body of work in and around her studio. Andrew Kuo Marlborough AM 37

New York artist Andrew Kuo recently made his debut solo exhibition with Chelsea's Marlborough Gallery. Entitled You Say Tomato, the new body of work features a combination of beautifully rendered geometric abstractions with the empirical precision of an x-y graph. Mr. Kuo not only gives the viewers visually engaging paintings, but also tugs at their heart strings with a chart system of emotions that one goes through while engaging in everyday past times such as watching TV, listening to music, or taking a road trip. It's intriguing to see the rhythmic ups and downs of every day thoughts & emotions translate into visual gems. It was very interesting to observe the Chelsea art crowd literally getting on their hands and feet to decipher Andrews well thought out artwork. Check out more below.

The recently dormant Blu has woken up with a series of murals in Southern Italy protesting the the construction of a Mobile User Objective System, an array of satellites being developed for the United States Department of Defense. Although unproven, the local people believe that their are health risks of long-term exposure to the high-power transmissions and have mounted major protests against the station being bulit there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TZDtxght-jQ Discuss Blu here.

escif2

Spanish muralist and street artist, Escif, was very active in his hometown of Valencia in Spain the last couple of months. Famous for his clever, direct and punchy commentaries on modern society, capitalism, consumerism, economy and politics (especially current situation in Spain and European Union), the artist shared couple of his recent street works online via StreetAgainst.com. Focused on wide range of different subjects, the pieces are all showcased with his signature, recognizable style - a simple, almost innocent looking image that is hiding a much deeper, stronger message behind it. For example, the wolves around old El Dorado cars in his collaboration mural with Hyuro are a critique on the human urge for wealth and power, in which wolves symbolize the human greedy, selfish character. Also, a businessman riding a rodeo horse symbolizes the very unstable economy situation in the world. And, a homeless family between two construction sites, commenting on the current situation in Spanish property development, or over-development to be precise. A rubbish bin with a title "Grand Prix" pointing at the situation around Formula 1 races in Valencia, and people that survive by digging through garbage. Or a witty use of double meaning of "Llama Ahora" phrase, which turns a famous telemarketing line (Call Now), into an call to revolution (Flame Now). Discuss Escif here.

Anthony Lister - theAudience - Theonepointeight (23)

Australian artist Anthony Lister recently arrived in Los Angeles to paint a new large scale mural at the offices of the theAudience. Continuing to use the thematic imagery tied in with the ballerina, Lister created a mural that not only shows off his signature style, but one that also shows he can move effortlessly between the confines of a studio and the open spaces of city streets. This mural sits in the the same building where JR pasted one of his pieces more than a year ago (covered), and also where the artist duo devNgosha recently painted a mural inside the office (covered). So If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area, don't forget to check out Lister's most recent piece sitting in the heart of West Los Angeles. It can't be missed.... Photo credit: Theonepointeight. As an encore to his shows in 2010 and 2011 at the Guerrero Gallery, the Philadelphia-based artist will be opening a new solo at the San Francisco showspace this Saturday (May 11th). Reinterpreting American landscapes with a post-apocalyptic tilt, Lukas' work  imagines a possible desolate future filled with of destruction and violence. The work also sees him continuing to explore incorporating printmaking techniques with traditional artistic processes. Take a look with us inside his studio as he was preparing for the upcoming show. Anthony Lister - theAudience - Theonepointeight (30)

Earlier this week, we brought you images of Anthony Lister's most recent mural in Los Angeles (covered). As usual, the Aussie's trip didn't end with just one piece to cover the walls of the city. On top of doing the large scale mural that sits on Beverly Blvd., he also painted inside the offices of theAudience. Creating this piece took no more than 20 minutes and as expected, Lister showed he can put on a show with his unique style, which at times gave the feeling that he was dancing with his creation as he was painting her. The live painting session ended with a fiery exclamation to complete the piece but check out a handful or more photos below... Photo credit: Theonepointeight. Discuss Anthony Lister here.

Remed and Okuda recently got together for a joint project in Spain at the Campo Viejo vineyards. Along with a mural they worked on, the two Spanish artists also collaborated on several sculptures at the Logroño location including the sweet large scale piece seen above. As you will probably agree, the geometric styles of both local artists blended together nicely and judging from the statement below, they will be working on future endeavors together. "Campo Viejo proposed to Okuda and Remed to create a work inspired by the expressiveness of their wines... Here is the result. The sculpture of six meters high that have placed in the middle of the vineyard is, according to the creators, 'a way to express their conception of life, and symbolizes a bridge between heaven and earth, primarily reflecting the will to live and be happy.' This innovative joint experience of Okuda and Remed with Campo Viejo has just started, and upcoming events will take place in London, Barcelona, Stockholm …" Photo credit: Nobulo (via Graffuturism). The French street artist and photographer seems to be everywhere. After our interview with JR last month, he has since brought his Wrinkles of the City project to Berlin (streets and in the gallery), premiered his latest film at the Tribeca Film Festival, got up on Riker's Island, and gifted New York with a new collaborative show and mural with José Parlá. As if that was not enough, the self-styled "photograffeur" also found time to bring his mobile photobooth van (first seen in Japan) to the most visited spot on earth, Times Square in Manhattan. Take a look at some photos below that we took last week... Discuss JR here.

Ryan De La Hoz has been grabbing our eye over the last couple of years and appreciation of his artwork has been building momentum rapidly recently. His current solo exhibition What New Mystery Is This? is showing at RVCA in San Francisco, and is accompanied by new window displays in the SF space by other artists we admire - Bill McRight and Ben Venom. Ryan's work utilizes cut paper and found imagery with exquisitely detailed ink linework to create a wonderful blend of Op-Art fused with geometric assemblages. The exhibition also sees him use a variety of other exciting new medias including bespoke jigsaw puzzles, disassembled and reconstituted to create exciting new compositions and also his first foray into sculpture with a series of laser cut images that start with a source image that are repeated and further distorted & abstracted across their progression as an installation (seen above). The exhibition runs until 25th May, so there is still time to check it out in person if you are in SF. Ryan also just opened a bricks and mortar store for his online shop Cool Try in SF too, so make it a double date. Check out some pictures from the opening event here. Pictures courtesy of the artist via Sami Naffziger. Discuss Ryan De La Hoz here.

Andrew Schoultz recently painted this mural in San Francisco on the side of Pop's Bar on 24th and York Stree in the Mission District. The Victorian style structure was reinvigorated with the locally-based artist's kinetic imagery including some of the motifs that appear commonly in his work - horses, bricks, telephone poles, and more. As you can see, the work navigated around the various architectural components as well as incorporated some existing graffiti. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.
