Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione recently visited Mexico City for the opening of his newest solo show "Obituary" @ Fifty24Mx gallery. The new show  includes new paintings and installations by the artist. It is part of his continuing body of work he started at Contemporary Art Museum of Bogota in August of 2012, strongly inspired by death, human imperfection, and spiritual rebirth. The exhibition integrates photography, installation, drawing, and painting made with Baglione's own blood. This radical method of creating art is actually turning his work process into kind of a sacrificial ceremony of death and resurrection. His paintings and drawings are showing recognizable calligraphy and feature distorted characters in stretched and twisted poses and are oftentimes anorexic and obese . With these images the artist is inviting the observer to think and reflect about the significance of ego in modern society.  Some of photographs exhibited were made in collaboration with the Italian photographer Fabio Stachi. This collaboration was titled 'Projeto Negro' and its a series of images that make a connection between the myth of fashion, and female form. Finally, during his visit to Mexican capital, Baglione did his part on a collaboration mural with Dave Choe that the American artists initiated few months ago during his own visit to the city.

There are numerous high quality art fairs occurring year round but the granddaddy of them all is Art Basel in Switzerland which opened its doors this week. Check out a quick look at a few gems from this year's fair.

Robert Burden's artwork centers around his love for childhood toys, heroes, and icons & is the subject of our latest Art Focus feature. His nostalgic representations of these action figures from his past are set against backgrounds and patterns taken from fabric, rug, or wallpaper from his home while growing up. This elevation of these mass produced items with a reverence and almost talismanic obsession is an ironic metaphor for the consumer addiction seen today. The series of work seen here was included in his recent show at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. For those interested in learning more about his work, check out the video below as well as a recent kickstarter project. AM recently had the chance to visit pop-surrealist painter Hisham Echafaki's studio. Using acrylic and oil paint, the London-based artist loves exploring symetry and patterns, as well as depicting animals in a surreal environment, as shown in his kufic and butterflies series. Kevin Earl Taylor's work has a timeless quality to it - within his work are we looking at scenes from an imagined future or relics from the past? The San Francisco based artist is back in the studio after a six month residency last year in Germany and currently gearing up for a large scale solo exhibition entitled Monument Adrift to be held in Portland at Breeze Block Gallery in July along with an exhibition by Chicago based Ryan Stewart Nault. Taylor works primarily with oils and thematically depicts natural elements presented as a totemic displays featuring a raft of animals interacting with armatures, scaffolds, monoliths, threads and other constructed components. San Francisco based photographer Winni Wintermeyer visited Kevin in his studio to record the progress on the new work for AM. Check out the wonderful studio visit pictures below. Ryan Stewart Nault is on the verge of having his first solo exhibition at Portland's Breeze Block GalleryI’m a Stranger Here Myself will see the young Chicago-based painter unveiling a fresh body of work on the back of multiple group exhibitions throughout the United States and the also the UK. Nault has recently completed his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He describes his work as harboring the effects of domestic comfort, which is evident throughout his past work, and transfers into this new body of work with familiar, soothing elements from everyday life. His compositions are broken down to base levels of the elements he captures and depicts using a clever mix of abstracted elements and light patterns to elegantly create a unique version of the traditional landscape fused with still life painting. The work will be shown alongside Kevin Earl Taylor's solo exhibition Monument Adrift (previewed). Both exhibitions open at Breeze Block Gallery on Friday, the 5th of July 2013. Check out these pictures that Ryan's sister, artist Alison Nault took for AM at his studio. Australian artistic couple, Dabs Myla, recently left their LA home/studio to spend couple of weeks traveling and painting around Europe. By creating poppy, very colorful, clean line wall murals, often topped with cute, cartoonish like characters that are their signature elements, the artists left their marks on walls all over the old continent. They visited The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, and collaborated with numerous Europe based graffiti artists such as Newtwo, Vino, Aryz, Boogie, Tiws, Soten, Bates, etc, along the way. They finished their Euro summer tour in Bergen, Norway, where they did an awesome outdoor installation with a help from NuArt Festival, along with painting some cute smaller walls next to the ocean, and in the forest. As a big finale of their tour, the artists painted two paintings which are getting released as prints through HandmadePosters on Tuesday 25th July 2013. Moonlight Fantasy and Good Times are both 7 color screenprints, are 43cm x 61cm, are printed on 300gsm high quality cotton art paper, both an edition of 150, and are signed and numbered. AM recently had the pleasure to visit the studio of multi-disciplinary artist Jen Stark as she prepares for her debut solo show in Canada tonight (6-10 pm) with Cooper Cole in Toronto. The LA-based artist's process is meticulous and her studio is very well organized with numerous projects coming to life simultaneously. Instantly recognizable as her own, Stark's work is rich in color theory and draws heavily from her interest in mathematics, deep space and the natural world. Take a glimpse below at her new body of work for Vortextural coming to life before it shipped up to Canada as well as take a look at the completed pieces here. Stark's work can be found in the permanent collection at The Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC and has exhibited at the Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA, Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, Sonoma, CA; Naples Museum of Art, Naples, FL; Frost Art Museum, Miami, FL: Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL and the Museum of Ft. Revok Pose Bowery Houston Wall Mural creation AM 022

AM took some time to catch up with artists Revok and POSE (pictured above) as they were next to tackle that monster wall on the corner of Bowery & Houston. Following in the footsteps of many notable artists such as RETNA, Kenny ScharfBarry McGeeShepard Fairey, AIKO, Os Gemeos, JR, Keith Haring, CRASH and Faile, the two members of the MSK crew accepted this hefty project at the historic mural location, but took a little bit of a different approach. Over the course of six days, the two decided to do much of their work in the evening. In electing to push their creative process opposite the prime time hours of the average New Yorker, they were free to focus less hindered by passerbys and also allowing them to dodge the stifling heat and humidity that haunts the Big Apple this time of year. However, mother nature didn't quite cooperate as the heat brought on intense rainstorms, but the duo braved the severe downpours and somehow managed to press on to create one of the most interesting murals we've seen in a while. Check out the creative action below. Discuss Revok here. Discuss POSE here.

Entitled I Just Called To Say, the piece the brothers created helped highlight the iconic DKNY logo on a series of billboards on the corner of 48th Street & 7th Ave. It seems like How & Nosm are hitting their stride since creating an impressive mural at the iconic Bowery & Houston walll and a great pop-up exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery.
