Ukrainian artists and muralist Waone and Aec, known as Interesni Kazki, recently took part in the LGZ Moscow project where they worked on two separate surrealistic murals. Waone did a piece called Flying & Crawling mind at Lublinskaya Str.3, while Aec worked on his Time Machine mural in Sadovnicheskaya  Str. 78, Moscow. Covering the era of the dinosaurs, constellations, age of big discoveries, technical progress and weapons development, Aec's mural shows the history of the planet, and the big influence that humans have over all of it. On the other hand, Waone's mural is the artist's homage to the world of books and written word, showing a thin line between what's written and the readers' imagination and experience. Fully painted with acrylic colors, both artist worked for about a week on each of these impressive murals, bringing their already beautiful ink concepts to life by painting it in large scale and using wide range of bright colors. The artists are currently working in Mexico, and have couple of big projects lined up for the rest of the year, so stay tuned for more on them. Discuss Interesni Kazki here.

Studio Visit: Finok

finok_studio13

Brazilian artist Finok aka Raphael Sagarra recently let us have a peek inside his home & studio in Sao Paulo, to have a look at some new paintings he's been working on recently. The young artist got introduced to the art world on the streets of his city back in 2002 when he noticed some kids painting graffiti in the street. He was intrigued by this creative illegal activity and quickly got into the "graffiti game" himself. A few years later he became part of the infamous Vlok crew together with graffiti legends such as  Nunca, Ise, Vino, Remio, Os Gemeos, Coyo, Toes and many others. It wasn't until about 2008-2009 when he started painting his first canvases. After years of painting walls, as well as sketching and drawing on paper, this was a huge change as he wasn't used to paying attention to so much detail as well as having so much time to work on a single image. This allowed him to experiment more and create deeper, richer, more detailed images, and that is how his recognizable colorful pieces were created. Known for bright, vibrant colors, rich patterns, linear gradients, use of symbols and his signature cartoon like characters, Finok's works found their way into some respected collections worldwide. Always inspired by the vibrant culture of his home land, Brazil, different cultures within, traditional kites, fire balloons or religion rituals, he tries to see his everyday life with a different vision and capture elements that people easily overlook. His works and their elements do have a story behind them, but the artist likes to leave it to the observer to get their own interpretation of it all. Combining acrylic paint, latex paint and spray paint, and utilizing different size canvases and wood panels, Finok developed a couple of recognizable types of works that all have root in his street graffiti pieces. Starting with his signature green color, to his familiar characters and portraits, his work got him a collaboration on a charity project with Ray Ban, an art project with Havaianas, and a chance to travel and create work in different corners of the globe. After a very successful show in Colone, Germany in 2012 at Ruttkowski;68 he has another one planned there next year, as well as a solo show opening this November at Smith Galleria in Sao Paolo, for which he's been preparing works most of the year.

Cleon Peterson LA mural AM 06

Last weekend, Cleon Peterson took on a large scale mural in downtown Los Angeles. Coming off a great summer exhibition across the pond at London's The Outsiders’ Soho gallery, Cleon kept his acerbic and raw edge as he composed a hard hitting piece featuring his signature "Brinksmen." Created over the span of two days, the wall was painted with a bloody looking color scheme making it a fresh eye-catcher for the people of LA. Check out a detailed look below... Wooster Collective Dumbo murals AM 17

The recent extensive showcase of street art put together by the Wooster Collective for their ten year anniversary exhibition (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was just the tip of the iceburg. In the streets of Williamsburg & Dumbo, the collective got ahold of some prime wall space for some of the artists involved to work on. We stopped by Brooklyn's DUMBO district to catch artists such as Shepard Fairey, DALeast, Faith 47, Eltono and MOMO put their signature styles on full display for the community to enjoy. Check out a behind the scenes look at the creation of these wonderful examples of urban beautification below.

KAWS BAM Mural AM 3

The artist that took MTV's Video Music Awards by storm (covered) is back in the streets of Brooklyn! Well, sorta. Before launching himself into the world of fine art and working with prestigious galleries such as Galerie Perrotin (here & here) and Honor Fraser (here & here), KAWS got started in the 90's leaving his mark on NYC's urban landscape with his signature graffiti tags and ad interventions. Now, he makes a prominent return outdoors with a fresh new mural coming up in Downtown Brooklyn, across the street from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). We stopped by in the rain to catch the progress of this beautiful composition. Located in Fort Greene, at the corner of Lafayette and Ashland, this gem now joins Barry McGee's massive mural (covered) and José Parlá’s large scale work at BAM's Fisher building (covered) to form a incredible triangle of art (all within 500 feet) that visitors can enjoy when visiting the area. Studio Visits: Chris Valkov

IMG_4309

Earlier this year, AM got to visit Chris Valkov in his studio as he prepared for his upcoming solo exhibition entitled Schematical Sabbatical. The Portland based artist uses a highly stylised aesthetic in his work, using a variety of mediums all derived from his background as an architectural draughtsman.  On initial inspection, his fluid line-work looks so tight that it could be mistaken for digitally created screen prints. Valkov is strictly old school though in his methodologies and his precise work is painted with One Shot enamel on wooden panels, combined with dimensional elements applied to the panel surface. His subject matter is varied. His has an obvious fascination with architectural, engineering and mechanical devices and he intertwines these themes with political, topical social commentaries along with a healthy dose of light hearted humour. His series of mock-architectural blueprints entitled The American House 1-4 are a wonderful combination of all of the above elements, and serve as a great homage to his traditional craft. Schematical Sabbatical is curated by Paige Prendergast and opens at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland on September 5th alongside group exhibition Buddy System Invitational (previewed). Discuss this show here.
