Recently during the Rock Werchter Festival of Belgium, Deih was invited to paint some stacked metal storage containers for the North West Walls event. Working well with the unique painting surface, the Spanish street artist chose to create some of his signature otherworldly comic-inspired imagery with an upside down character. He further explains his piece - "We, humans, only can watch at Cosmos' face trapped by our limit´s perception. We will follow trying to understand it although I think we are not able to think in that strange way in which Cosmos developed himself." Discuss Deih here.

Italian artist and activist Blu visited Slovenia last month in order to support the efforts of the local Rog Factory (Tovarna Rog) squat in their fight against the municipality of Ljubljana. During his stay, the street artist painted a strong piece depicting a gun created out of different tools, instruments and equipment used by the squatters, symbolizing their strength in their fight against the capital. This old bicycle factory has been abandoned since the downfall of Yugoslavia until 2006. For the last decade, it served as a base for different non-profit activities (solidarity actions, safe spaces for refugee self-organization), as well as hosting art & craft studios, used as an indoor skate park, circus practice ground, social center, gym, etc. Due to its central location, the municipality of Ljubljana is now trying to gentrify the area along with the rest of the downtown area. According to their plan, parts of the complex would be demolished and turner into profitable purpose facilities and institutionalized art spaces. These efforts culminated on the 6th of June at 03:15 in the morning, when a security company hired by the municipality stormed into the Rog with a bulldozer in order to 'secure' the space and to turn it into a construction site. The squat community managed to defend the place, the same way they defended it from neo-nazi attackers only a few days later. After these events, the Blu showed his support by painting an effective mural that symblozes the strength of these individuals. By using ropes to hang on the facade of the large building, he created a large pink/red gun formed from such weapons as skateboards, tools, instruments, pens, brushes, bicycle tiers, etc. Photo credit by rtvslo.si / siol.net. Only 10 days ahead of his big London debut, Pejac released another fresh intervention created recently on the streets of British capital. As a response to Brexit and it's causes and consequences, the Spanish artist came up with yet another fresh concept to comment on the sensitive sociopolitical issue. Borrowing a title from the iconic British band Oasis, Don't Look Back in Anger is a recreation of Van Gogh’s Starry Night scratched with car keys on a hood of a black Jaguar. Mixing vandalism and fine art while using such a strong British icon as his canvas, he is cleverly playing with the title of the work, while expressing his own anger about the situation. Aware that passion leads to destruction, but also motivates creativity, this original piece both speaks about the fragility of wealth and power, and the strength of individuals in such circumstances. Pejac's solo show Law of The Weakest is opening in London on July 22nd and will stay on view for only 9 days. Discuss Pejac here.

Week after week, new murals are being painted all around Kiev as a part of the ongoing ArtUnitedUs festival curated by Geo Leros, Iryna Kanishcheva and Waone Interesni Kazki. Sebas Velasco was one of the artists that recently visited the Ukrainian capital and left his mark on its urban landscape. For this piece, Spanish artist picked a selection of his personal photographs showing different images of the city featuring night lights, graffiti, typography and architecture, as well as a portrait of a friendly local that invited the artist for dinner. More focused on brush work, choice of color, line work or texture, rather than message or the story behind the image, Velasco paid tribute to local realistic painters from the beginning of the 20th century. Along with the unusual composition of this collage-like work, its the great effect of nightlights that make this work stand out, which is further accented with the neon light over the character's eyes.

This week in Providence, Nychos continued his hectic schedule with a snow leopard mural for the INFLUX public art festival put on by The Avenue Concept. The nonprofit organization working to bring sustainable public art to Rhode Island welcomed in the Austrian artist (with the help of INOPERAbLE) to paint his distinctive cartoonish dissected imagery for the project concentrated in two locations - downtown Providence and the “Cultural Corridor” between Classical and Central High Schools. Last week, Invader started his first wave of public art in the city of Toulouse with some of his iconic tile-based works. Choosing an appropriate color for his video game-based characters, the French artist glued up ten different pieces in the "Pink City," known for the pinkish terracotta bricks used in its architecture. Toulouse is the 66th city to be "invaded" by the street artist - you can see more in the photos below... Discuss Invader here.

Sebas Velasco recently painted a new mural in the old town of Croatian harbor city of Rijeka. Blending his expressive painterly style with the aged building and its unusual architecture, he created a narrative dedicated to the workers of the city. Invited in by the local Museum of Contemporary Art, the Spanish artist contributed to their ongoing program of creating public works in order to revitalize quiet and forgotten parts of the city. As a busy harbor and railroad intersection, Rijeka has always long been an industrial center point of the region. As such, it attracted people from the region and further, who created their homes and built the city's identity as an unique "port of diversity." With this in mind, Velasco painted a portrait of a local man he met on the first day, along with elements Rijeka's recognizable industrial architecture. Located on a busy intersection in the city center, next to the river and railroad, it speaks about everything that the curators wanted to point out with this project.

French artist JR (interviewed) recently completed a new installation in Rio de Janeiro utilizing an intriguing new technique lending the work a more three-dimensional feel. The clever new piece is based on a photo of Mohamed YOUNES IDRISS of Sudan (who didn't qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics) performing a high jump over the top of building with the assistance of some scaffolding. Discuss JR here.

Recently in Sedona, Arizona, El Mac finished painting a mural that was commissioned by a local Whole Foods store. Near and dear to his heart, the piece featured a portrait of his mother-in-law and her granddaughter juxtaposed against a background inspired by the famous Beethoven Frieze by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt. His work was inspired by a "Beethoven symphony from 1824, which was inspired a poem, Ode To Joy, by Friedrich Schiller from 1785 which begins with the line - "Joy, beautiful spark of divinity..." - giving this mural its title. Discuss El Mac here.
